At the start we saw ‘Crows an Wra’ and ‘Magic’ take the shortest route close inshore, short tacking down the coast whilst the rest of the fleet took a long first beat out into the channel. We went with the main fleet but soon found that in the very light westerly wind we were struggling with our small working jib. However, as we got further out into the channel the tide and the wind picked up and we felt that, taking our handicap into consideration, we were holding our own. We followed the fleet, taking our turn to tack back towards the welsh shore and to begin the process of tacking back and forth towards Aberthaw.

Kindred Spirit


After our first tack back towards the welsh shore the wind dropped away the closer we got to the coast. So we decided not to follow the main fleet and tacked back out into the channel to make the most of the stronger wind before tacking back to round the Aberthaw cooling tower, to complete the windward leg with just the 2 long beats.

The run back east towards Barry went well although ‘Dancer’ only has a small working jib she is a light boat and made good progress east, catching and then overtaking the much bigger and heavier yacht ‘Kindred Spirit’ and  we felt we were slightly closing on ‘Dawn Star’ and ‘Jade’ who were just in front of us. We were the 16th boat to cross the line in just over 3hrs 6 min and finished 5th overall.
We finished a wonderful day back at Barry rafting up with other competitors before going to the club house, where there was much merriment and we were very pleased to see Howard Lavis, Skipper of ‘Timbobbin’ announced the winner to loads of cheers and applause, a very popular winner.
